ABYSS Brewery & Tap

Project type: Hospitality Interior Design

Having been good friends with Andy and Andrew from ABYSS Brewing through the local vintage Volkswagen and craft beer scenes and with 20+ years of hospitality and retail design experience ABYSS appointed MidcenturyReFind to design their new brewery and taproom within the old Malthouse in Lewes.

MidcenturyReFind created a taproom which is unique in the UK with a space you don’t expect to find in such a building.

From the entrance tunnel which allows views in to the brewery space and with focus on the merchandise retail element opposite which then leads in to the main bar space featuring a tall back bar element framing the tap wall with strong branding for the all important social media photographs.

The new bar and cold room elements within the space are clad in beautifully detailed and executed black plywood with black stained vertical timber slats bringing focus to the take-out fridge and providing screening to the seating area adjacent to the entrance corridor.

The concrete bar top has patinated wonderfully over the last few years with a polished top surface and rough front edge detail.

This taproom has proved to be extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and MidcenturyReFind has now been asked to design the new ABYSS Brighton bar and food hall opening early 2027….
